In dialogue with ba-bau AIR’s ongoing research in Hòa Bình, which examines the intertwined notions of homeland, belonging, and the act of retracing an cestral histories, this work extends the inquiry toward questions of indigeneity, and the relationships between identity, land, and place of origin. Through the form of a lunchbox-cum-incense bowl, the work posits an object that functions simultaneously as a vessel of remembrance and sustenance, mediating between the material and the spiritual. It asks: what forms of nourishment, what inti mate memories of being fed, can one carry forward when the site of home is left behind? The ceramic form, modeled after a food container, with excerps of Mường botanical embroidery motifs and images from the city - street dove lightbox and the imaginary key in the tradition heritage house of the Hoà Bình Hydroelectric dam. Embedded within its form are fragments and body parts of mythical crea tures said to have vanished with the construction of the hydroelectric dam. Across and inside the tiffin’s surface, blue carbon-traced landscapes linger, destined to dissolve upon contact with the scent of gathering. The air is thick with the warmth of crushed, carefully archived samples of native plants - piper leaves lá dổi and hạt dổi, recalling domestic rituals and the intimacy of shared meals. One might even senses smoke curls behind the ear, brushing the nape like a whisper.
