“Betel nut chewing and teeth blackening, once a beauty standard and tradition in pre-French colonial Vietnam, has largely faded. Meanwhile, in Taiwan, the betel nut business continues to thrive, often intertwine with sexual imagery. Reimagining the practice of teeth blackening by substituting another body part, such as nails, offers a way to preserve and reinterpret the tradition.
During the course of the residency & research in Taiwan with OCAC, Kiều-Anh has unfolded types of betel variations across the country. On today’s omakase, she picks and serves only a local betel shop’s specialty. Participants are invited to chew betel nuts, spit and swallow as they wish for their own physical pleasure, as post-pleasure juice will be their nail-dying shades, to be preserved and constantly modified into eternity the operations of painting and scraping, forever undoing the artworks.”
